It is very unusual to find a wearable silk lace wedding dress from the 30s together with the original slip and crystal set belt! I was so happy to find this one which was worn for a wedding in the early 1930s.
The photographs were all taken in natural light on a sunny day. The dress appears to change colour in different lights. The most true colour is shown in the close up of the dress featuring the belt. Sun was shining through the windows on the other photographs.
The dress is a confection of bias cut lace layers which give a wonderful body conscious drape to this form fitting but demure dress. It is very feminine and would best suit someone with a small bust as there are no darts. The fabric has an all over scrolling styalized shell design. The bodice is close fitting and the skirt more draped. The lace layers are asymetric and the angel sleeves very floaty. The beautiful belt is one of the things that really attracted me to this dress. It has a couple of stones missing but this is barely noticeable as you can see in the photographs.
The dress - there are several old repairs and also some areas where there are breaks in the lace. As the bodice is completely lined in matching coloured tulle, it is very difficult to see any of the imperfections. The neckline has been re-bound with silk which was dyed to match the dress, as the original chiffon binding had broken in several places.
The slip - the side opening has been re-bound with matching silk as the original edge had become very worn. The original snaps have been re-applied in the same places as on the original. The pink silk chiffon straps have been re-sewn as they had pulled away from the bodice section. I would remove the added panel on the slip so that the bottom section of the dress was transparent. This would remove the fabric added in the 1930s which is now starting to deteriorate in places. There is some evidence of weakness of the fabric around the armhole area of the slip.
My description makes this dress sound far worse than it is but I would hate you to be disappointed. The photographs speak for themselves. Any wearer is guaranteed to feel and look like a real lady! I have period gloves and shoes that would complement this dress beautifully. Ask if you would like to see them.
